Permissive Parenting And Children

Permissive Parenting And Children

John’s parents were always affectionate towards him. His parents allowed him to sleep and wake up the way he wanted. Absolutely no restrictions on maintaining proper sleep timing. John was also allowed to listen to loud music and go his own way all the time. Many might wonder whether there is any kind of parenting involved in this situation. Of course, there is indeed one parenting style involved, and that is permissive parenting. This is a parenting style featuring high responsiveness and low demands. Children under this parenting style get a lot of love but no rules and guidelines to follow.

Parents do not make any attempts to discipline or control their kids. Hence, there are dire consequences of this style of parenting. We will have a look at them below:

Impulsive Children

Children under the permissive style of parenting become quite impulsive. They try doing everything in haste.

Furthermore, they do not take responsibilities for the things they do or the mistakes they commit. Permissive parents generally justify the misbehavior of their children with a “children will be children” statement. As such, these kids are reckless, and they never accept their mistakes.

Poor Performance

Such children do not perform well at studies mainly because they are not answerable to their parents. Also, the parents expect very little from their wards, which means that the children do not have any objectives in life. Hence, they take studies to be a formality and end up getting nowhere in life.

Poor At Making Decisions

Since parents practicing permissive style of parenting do not have any expectations from their children, the kids have almost nothing they can choose to strive towards. Thus, they show low accomplishment in different areas of work and play. Also, because the parents do not enforce or set any guidelines or rules for them to follow, such children always struggle when it comes to solving problems and making decisions.

Lack Of Social Skills

Because the parents refrain from teaching their kids proper behavior, the kids lack different social skills like caring, empathy, and sharing. While the wards might be very good when communicating with others, they might fall behind in other significant skills.

Emotional Inadequacy

Permissive parents always have this fear of upsetting their kids by doing or saying something the kids will not like. Hence, the parents do everything needful for meeting their demands. They put in good efforts in making them happy. Consequently, such parents barely allow the child to express other emotions apart from happiness. Since such kids do not know how to handle their emotions, specifically in situations when they do not get the things they want. They might have a tough time when faced with emotionally difficult and stressful situations.

Inclination Towards Substance Use And Delinquency

Research shows that kids raised under the permissive style of parenting have more chances of engaging in substance or alcohol use and misconduct.

It is good to allow your children to do what they want, but the same freedom can lead to high mayhem if it is not used in the right manner. In other words, the impact of permissive parenting can be quite unpleasant for children and even their parents.
