Low Birth Weight: Everything About It

LBW or low birth weight is a term which describes the condition of babies who are born underweight. These babies have a load of fewer than 5 pounds or 8 ounces. A regular newly born baby has a weight of approximately 8 pounds. Though a baby born with low birth weight might be small, it does not mean that they are unhealthy. But this can also lead to some adverse problems in their health.

What Are The Factors Behind Low Birth Weight?

The most common cause behind this is a baby being born too early than expected. And this is a severe problem and can lead to the baby being small and underweight. A baby has to live in their mother’s womb for 37 weeks. And when a baby gets born earlier, they do not get enough time to grow and gain weight. This is the main reason that they have a low birth weight. And the fact that much of their weight is obtained during the last few weeks makes it further difficult. So if a baby gets born earlier, they do not stay in the womb long enough to add more weight and size.

Another primary reason which leads to a reduction in weight during birth is IUGR. This is a common problem among babies and happens when they are in the womb. When a baby does, not grows well enough inside the belly of their mother this problem arises. There is no specific answer to this, as there can be multiple reasons for it. It can also happen with mothers who do not have a strong placenta. The health of the mother also has a significant impact on the health of the baby. The babies who are born after 37 weeks are healthy and mature. But those who are born before this period are small and immature.

Who Is At Risk?

Apart from the above two reasons, there is another crucial factor which can affect the health of the baby significantly. The things which concern the mother of a baby also have a direct impact on their health. If the mother gets an infection during her pregnancy, it may result in the baby not getting enough nutrients to grow. It is also essential that the mother gains enough weight during the pregnancy to support the kid. If this does not happen, the kid can fail to grow. If the mother had an earlier pregnancy in which she gave birth to a low weight baby, the chances and risk of the same happening again increase.

The mother mustn’t have any bad habits which can affect the health of the baby. If they smoke, drink, or do drugs regularly, it can lead to serious health problems when it comes to the baby also if this problem has been genetically present in the family, the risk increases. And if the mother is under 17 years of age then the chances and risk increases. Because of this, it is essential to take proper care of the mother during her pregnancy.
