Does Professional Children Care Make a Difference?

Professional children care

What do you think about professional children care? More than 70% of children in Canada have experienced some kind of children care arrangement. The number also resonates in other countries. Everywhere, more people are choosing to keep their kids under professional children care services when both parents are working. However, the question remains as to how professional children care affects the growth of your kids.

There is a lot of speculation on this subject. Many people fall prey to common myths surrounding this subject. Ideally, you should keep an open mind.

The Top Assumptions About Professional Children Care

One common assumption is that children who are in professional daycare tend to fare better than children who are brought up at home. However, that is false. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) conducted a study in the US to study the influence of child care and home environment on more than 1,000 children. The study found that:

  • Children who were brought up at home by their mothers developed in the same manner as children who were cared for by other people for a fixed amount of time.
  • Parental and family characteristics always play a more important role in child development even if the kids are kept in children-care during the day.
  • If mothers are responsive, sensitive and caring, then the children reflect those traits too. This is because parental interactions determine a child’s attitude to family and loved ones.

Differences When it Comes to Professional Children Care

There are both pros and cons to home-based and centre-based care. However, if you are a concerned parent, then you can be assured that your children will get adequate care in a centre. They will develop good cognitive and language skills because they will spend the day in the company of other children.

They will also develop pre-academic skills which will later help them get ahead in school. Young kids in children care centres tend to have fewer behaviour problems because they learn the art of behaving in company earlier than kids who only spend time their family.

The Focus on Quality:

You should not take the quality of a children care service for granted. It is important that you do a lot of research because lower-quality centres can do more harm than good. While most centres will try to give your child a warm and supportive environment, there are very few that can actually stimulate development in a healthy manner.

You can identify higher quality children care by their positive attitude. They encourage children to ask questions and engage in conversations more frequently. They also discourage negative behavior and discipline children in the mildest manner possible.

As working parents, it is understandable that you want your child to be in a safe space when you are not around. So it is best that you conduct a thorough search and choose a centre based on trusted recommendations.
